Family History Spotlight

Maxine E. Sutherland

She enjoyed sewing, travelling, playing the piano and violin, creative writing, and dramatics. At the same time, she gave her life to education; as a teacher and as a student. She developed her talents which enabled her to fulfill her life's mission in a way which was uniquely hers. Even though she never married, she lived a fulfilling life of which most people would only dream.

Here is a list of some of the amazing events in her life:

-She trained as a teacher at the Calgary Normal School and was one of the first ESL teachers in Canada.

-She taught in Devonia Lake, Pincher Creek, Aklavik (NWT), Baffin Island, and Resolute Bay.

-She worked with the National Northern Affairs in Ottawa.

-She won the Centennial Medal from the Secretary of State.

-She was the first to attend the Radio Institute at Queens University.

-She wrote for CBC.

-She wrote an activity book as well as textbooks.

I am inspired by what I have learned about her life. She has demonstrated that a single person can live a full and enriching life. I would count myself lucky if I can do the same.
